Please sign this petition now opposing the Government's proposal to make large areas of protected oldgrowth forests available for logging (and share it as widely as possible)
To Gladys Berejiklian (Premier of NSW),
Your government has recently announced its intention to drastically weaken the logging rules (Integrated Forestry Operations Approval - IFOA) to remove numerous protections for NSW's threatened species, Koalas, oldgrowth forest and fish.
The people of NSW call upon you to:
  1. Stop the NSW Government proceeding with these draconian changes.
  2. Ensure that public forests are managed for the public good (ie: tourism, environmental repair, carbon sequestration and storage, wildlife habitat and provision of clean, abundant water)
  3. Stop planning to log areas protected as habitat for threatened species, Koalas, oldgrowth forest, and stream buffers.
  4. Stop increasing logging intensity and legalising clearfell logging along the North Coast of NSW.
  5. Stop propping up the rapacious native forest logging industry at the cost of species extinction, logging dieback, reduced stream flows and water quality decline.
  6. End the logging of public native forest and complete the transition of the timber industry to 100% plantations.

Logging legislation should be strengthened , not weakened. Considering the impacts on our unique wildlife, such as koalas, and their role in bringing in billions of dollars in tourism , protecting our native forests would support more jobs in the long term than logging them for what are often low value products such as firewood and woodchips. They clean our air and water . What value is put on that ? Why is their role in a time fo changing climate not acknowledged in legislation ? Please move into plantation timber and out of native forests .

The people that have control, need to look at what will be left. ,

“Economic growth” is not everything. What about “Australian ecology growth”

I am participating in this action as a resident of the UK and hope you would agree that all actions relating to the well being of any part of the natural world would be regarded as global in nature rather than national.

Old growth forests must be protected. The small amount of jobs prolonged before their inevitable demise is just not worth the destruction of irreplaceable old growth forests. Trees are priceless.

There is often precious little difference between the 2 major parties’ environmental policies, but this has extreme right wing conservative written all over it. No wonder the NSW Liberal government doesn’t want this scrutinized. It says: " We

don’t give a toss about the environment, the wildlife or climate change, we just want to establish an export market for wood – duh. " This is lazy and clueless legislation – I hope the people of NSW realize what their leaders are trying to do to their environment before it is too late.

It’s inconceivable that we’re still so cavalier with our native forests and unique Australian wildlife when we know how critical they are for our own existence here on earth. We can move from native forests to plantations and keep a healthy natural world and jobs for our workers. We just need the political will.

Please increase the protection of what little old growth forest is remaining and switch to 100% plantation timber. There are far more jobs to be created through tourists visiting our majestic National Parks than short-term jobs in a destructive logging industry. Please make us proud by implementing foresighted environmental policies and not ashamed to be witness to the current regressive changes to forest and animal/bird protections. Please listen and take heed of the scientists and their voices of reason and do not give-in to the pressures of avaristic big business.
